Legends of the Autobahn & Audi Club West Coast Meet

posted Mar 26, 2013, 3:43 PM by Pat Oneal   [ updated May 15, 2013, 7:03 PM ]

Come join us and be a part of the Legends of the Autobahn auto show on August 16, 2013.  The Golden Gate Chapter is organizing Audi’s participation at Legends of the Autobahn car show, and Audi Club West Coast Meet.   The Legend of the Autobahn car show has grown from a BMW picnic to become one of the most popular Club events of the Monterey Classic Car week.   Aside from the special factory displays, the cars in attendance will come from the members of the local (and national) Audi, BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes Benz club chapters.   This year the event returns to the Rancho Canada Golf Club 4860 Carmel Valley Rd, in Carmel Valley, California.  As it was last year, in our inaugural year, Audi owners will have the opportunity to display their technically superior cars amongst the other great German marques on the greens of this beautiful private golf club.   As anyone with even a semblance of exotic synthetic oils in their veins can imagine, there will be many interesting and significant cars to enjoy.   Please make plans to join us at this great gathering.

There are two ways to display your car, the general mixed marque corral, and the special “Judged Car” Audi display area.   We don’t want to call it a Concours since most of the cars are driven (some driven very well, yes!?!) on a daily basis.  General Car Corral registration is $30 through July 28th; then $45 for late registration.  The “Judged Car” registration will be $60, then $75 for late registration.  We will award “Judged Car” trophies three deep in the following three classes:

·        Four Rings Historic (open to any of the original Auto Union marques)

·        Sports - Competition - Modified

·        Audi Marque

·        Ur-Quattro (1987 and earlier Audi Quattros)

*We reserve the right to move cars into different classes or reorganize the classes slightly if there are not enough cars to fill a class.  You will be notified of any changes.

Registration closes for all cars on August 9th.  The August 16th event is free for spectators, and we are told there is ample free parking.   This is a busy area, with Concourso Italiano next door at the Laguna Seca Golf Course, so plan to arrive early.

There will be food, beverages, and auto regalia available in a festival like atmosphere.  As in all Golden Gate chapter events all entered cars will receive some special Audi Club SWAG.

The special Legends of the Autobahn golf shirts, this year in Navy, will be available for pre-order at $50 each for small, medium, or large, and $55 for XL and above.

There are several meal options available when purchased in advance.  A breakfast buffet is $12.95, and there are two lunch options.  The lunch buffet is $24.95, and a Legends VIP Luncheon is available in the clubhouse for $44.95.  The various menus can be reviewed when registering.  Participants can also choose to bring a picnic lunch, as choices for A La Carte food at the event may be limited.

We are also looking and asking for volunteers to participate as judges, and as general assistants.  Volunteers will be compensated with the buffet breakfast for their special talents and efforts.

There are many other things to see at the event.  Numerous product displays, special manufacturer displays, and our Audi Club tent staffed to impart general club information on upcoming events and membership.  The Spaten beer tent (isn’t this a Great Event!) is confirmed to be on the green again this year for their welcomed variety of refreshment.

Once again, we are working with Audi of America and Audi AG to bring a set of special vehicles for our Club’s display and for all to enjoy.  Of course, most of the cars at the show will be the personal cars we all know and love; and we get to share them on this special day.  We are encouraging all area Audi owners to come, join us in the prideful display of their cars, while enjoying the camaraderie of other Audi owners on the grass in this all day, family friendly, car show and picnic-like event.  To find out more, please visit the combined marque main event website http://www.legendsoftheautobahn.org/.

The events schedule is as follows:

6:30 AM                              Registration opens for pre-registered “Judged Cars”.
6:30 - 8:00 AM                  “Judged Cars” will be placed on field in their specific area.
8:00 – 9:00 AM                  Registration opens for General Corral cars (parked in “All-Marques”).

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM         Judging / Special Presentations / Guest Speakers.
12:00 - 1:00 PM                Luncheon
1:30 - 3:00 PM                   Awards Ceremony for “Judged” cars

4:00 PM                              Event ends

In addition to the Legends of the Autobahn event, there are many things to see and do in the area during the “Pebble Beach Weekend”. If there is interest, one can go to any of the different events taking place during the weekend like the Monterey Motorsports Reunion historic car races on August 17 and 18, or the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 18th – honoring the 100th Anniversary of Aston Martin.  This year’s additional featured cars are Porsche 911, BMW 507, Simplex, Vanvooren Coachwork, and Lincoln Custom Coachwork.

We encourage everyone to sample the large variety of auto related events all over the Monterey Peninsula.  It is common to see cars rarely seen in magazines driving though the streets of Monterey, or parked on Carmel’s Ocean Avenue.   People come from all over the world to participate, see and be seen, at the plethora of local events. They come to take in the thick atmosphere of auto exotica that permeates the area streets. It all culminates at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday.  We encourage all who wish to be a part of this extraordinary experience to get their tickets and room reservations early.  If you would like to get more information about all events during Pebble Beach weekend visit the Pebble Beach Concours website at http://www.pebblebeachconcours.net .  If you have questions about our event, please contact Pat O’Neal at pat@audiclubgoldengate.org or Larry Whitney at Larry@audiclubgoldengate.org .   We hope you will be able to join us for the fun.

Yosemite Drive and Potluck Picnic

We're heading to Yosemite National Park!

ACGG Yosemite Drive and Potluck Picnic - Saturday June 1, 2013.

Get ready for a great day of driving your Audi and seeing some of the most beautiful sights in North America. This time of year we expect the falls to be at full capacity and the rivers rushing. The first spring flowers should be in full bloom.

What to expect

We will meet at Starbucks in Manteca, 1451 Hulsey Way just off Northwoods Ave. This is west of 99 at the 120 offramp. Directions to this location can best be found through Google maps, but is close to the freeway highway. Meet up time will be 7:30 AM and the club will be buying coffee and breakfast snacks for all attendees. At Starbucks we will go over the tentative schedule for the day and head to the Yosemite Valley NLT 8:00. We will have one rest break along the way. We should arrive park entrance about 10:00 and into the valley about 10:30. We want to see as much as possible and do some short hikes (Yosemite falls, Vernal Falls, etc) and see other sights, Mirror Lake, Bridal Vail Falls, Half Dome, etc. The agenda can vary based on collective input. Along the way about 12:00 or 12:30 we will find a picnic grounds and share a pot luck lunch. The Club will bring the plates, utensils, beverages, napkins, etc. You will need to bring stuff (food - see online registration form for details) to share. I will try to give everyone an assignment so we do not end up with 6 bowls of potato salad. The list is attached ... bring plenty to share. Previous drives to Yosemite have produced true "foodie" picnics and have added a lot to a beautiful day.

After Lunch...

After lunch and pictures we will continue meandering around the park and taking in all the visual beauty that is on display. If the group wishes to meet later in the afternoon we can meet at the Ahwanee Hotel about 4:30-5:00 for further planning and/or farewell beverage. Some of us will head back maybe stopping for dinner in the foothills and others will have made overnight arrangements either in the park or just outside.

Your to do list should include a full tank of gas when we leave Manteca ... It is about 120 miles from Manteca to the valley floor.

Preparation

The weather can be highly variable, and can change on short notice so be prepared for a variety of conditions; and coats, hats, gloves etc. are advised to have in the car. Binoculars, camera, etc. are a must. Comfortable walking shoes are advised. We should have club radios to communicate between cars in case we get separated or need to take an unscheduled break.

For this trip to Yosemite, you simply arrive, and prepare yourself to enjoy the drive, the sights, meeting new people, and forming lasting memories. The cost of the event is $20/car and driver and $15 /guest. Don’t forget to bring an additional $20 for your car's admission to the park.

Some may wish to stay overnight at or near the park.  This information can be obtained by visited http://www.nationalparkreservations.com/
